| Colds, OTCs and Antibiotics, Is It Any Wonder? | |

As I made the rounds of the stores during the holiday I was
met with sneezing, coughing and runny nosed clerks! Luckily
my husband nor I have contracted a cold, but we make sure
our immune system is up to par the year round. We do that
with minerals, mega nutrient vitamins and herbs, not OTC
or Prescriptions. The reason for using those is that there
are no OTC or Prescription medications to build your
immune system. Quite the contrary!
Clerks handling money, products and coughing without covering
their mouth and nose. Is it any wonder that colds are running
rampant at this time of the year?
People who fall into that colds trap and catch a virus/cold go
rushing to the store to get a cold remedy over-the-counter
(OTC). Or to their doctor asking for an antibiotic prescription.
But is that a good idea?
NO! There are dangers in OTC and prescription remedies!
And most certainly you do not want an antibiotic for a cold!
An antibiotic will probably extend your cold!
Some of those medications, designed to treat colds, allergies
and insomnia, contain an active ingredient called
diphenhydramine hydrochloride - a drug that can be dangerous
for people up in years or with already compromised immune
systems and/or slow circulatory systems, such as heart patients
or post-stroke patients. Some of those dangerous medications
are; Allerdryl, AllerMax, Aller-med, Banophen, Beldin, Beldin

An example; In the 80's my husband and I took over the
care of our elderly neighbors, who had no children nor family
that we ever saw, when they became ill. She ended up in
the hospital on New Years day in 1990, which ultimately
put her in a nursing home. He ended up in the hospital on
January 3rd from complications of diuretics given him for
his heart, but died hours after being discharged the
hospital. That was before I understood the necessity of
mineral balance to keep the heart healthy.
My husband and I would go in daily and see Nina in the
nursing home to make sure she was being treated properly.
One of those visits found her sitting in her wheelchair in the
hallway totally unresponsive and an extremely low heart rate.
The night before she had been fine, which made it puzzling.
I went to the nurse's station to ask why, and received no
sensible answer. I asked to see her chart and found a
prescription for a cough medication that had been
administered the night before and that morning. She did
not have a cold but did have a cough caused by certain
heart medications. I had them stop the cough medication
and by the next morning she was almost normal again. If
we had not been there she could have died with that low
a heart rate.
Dangers exist with other than cough and cold preparation
medications. While in the hospital the doctor had started
her on a heart medication resulting in a cough. That was
the reason the nursing home staff requested the cough
medication, which wouldn't stop the cough anyway.
Another case of one medication leading to another. I fear
what would have happened to her if I had not been
diligent and knowledgeable about medications.
That incident was only the beginning of a couple of other
nursing home life threatening blunders that led to us
going to court to take her out of the SKNF and home
with us, until her death six months later.
OTC medications can be dangerous to your health after
all they were once a prescription until the drug companies
lost individual rights to that prescription allowing for generic
copies. They then request FDA for OTC status.
Care must be taken when consuming any treatment
whether natural, prescribed or OTC.
Is it any wonder we have such colds running rampant, with
clerks spreading germs by your contact with them? Get
your immune system in tune now and avoid that trap!
